Judging the New Legislation

WELCOME to perspectives on social justice, I am Lairalaine White your host! As a faith based organization, we take every opportunity to present our social justice perspectives from a faith perspective, & tonight’s show is focused on issues relating to the climate crisis and the action plans of the new presidential administration.

In planning for this segment, our goal was to simply talk about what we felt the nexts steps should be.

But our jaws dropped and there was a collective exhale when just few hours after being sworn in, this new American president of the United States, signed a series of executive orders affecting the climate crisis!

Most notably:

1. Recommitting the United States, the largest contributor to global warming in history, to the Paris climate agreement, and, according to a New Yorker times article:

2. Revoked the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline;

3. Reversed the rollbacks to the Environmental Protection Agency vehicle emissions standards;

4. Undoing decisions to slash the size of several national monuments;

5. Enforced a temporary moratorium on oil and natural gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; and

6. Re-establishing a working group on the social costs of greenhouse gasses.

As a climate activist, I know these steps are only the beginning and will not resolve the ongoing debate on issues such as fracking etc. but I believe that both sides of the debate can see these actions as opportunities to resolve and mitigate these crisis constructive and fair manner.

I prefer to direct my questions to the faith community on this issues by asking.

1. What actions are we committed take to hold elected officials accountable as stewards of the planet provided to us?

2. As stewards ourselves, what will we do individually to increase awareness and make a contribution to a cleaner environment?
